Our prescription policies.

  • Non-controlled medications.

These are routine medications that you may be prescribed for an illness or condition. They are generally not habit-forming and are not controlled or monitored by the federal DEA. Dr. Scalfano may have set up refills on your original prescription of these medications, if appropriate.

  • Controlled Medications.

These medications carry a higher rate of abuse potential or may have a need for more careful monitoring. Prescriptions for these medications are regulated and reviewed by the federal DEA and we must comply with state and federal regulations when prescribing them. Keep in mind these limitations if you are prescribed a controlled medication:

-NO REFILLS permitted. You must call or message us if you need more medication.

-REFILLS CAN TAKE UP TO 5 BUSINESS DAYS. Do not wait until you only have 1-2 days’ of medication left! We encourage a 90 day supply, if appropriate.

-PATIENTS MUST BE SEEN EVERY 3 MONTHS. In order to properly monitor these medications, patients must see the doctor every 3 months… This can be an in-office or telemedicine appointment. If choosing telemedicine, the patient must have their weight, blood pressure, and pulse taken while on the medication and prior to the start of the visit. We recommend that patients who require regular visits for medication purchase a home blood pressure cuff in order to make gathering these vital signs easier.

-ADDITIONAL CHARGES: There are no added charges for these prescriptions if written during a visit or in between visits HOWEVER, there is a $35 fee if a prescription that has already been sent must be cancelled and a new one put into a different pharmacy. Please make sure your pharmacy information is correct at the time of your medication request. Make sure that your pharmacy stocks your medication.

  • Medications for depression/anxiety.

While these medications aren’t considered controlled medications, it is Dr. Scalfano’s practice to see patients needing these medications every 3 months. This can be an in-office or telemedicine visit.
